BWS-Black Walnut Salve and it’s Benefits
Black walnut salve is a type of body butter that is used to help with various skin conditions. Made from organic matter,(black walnut hulls) it is most commonly used as a remedy for your epidermis. Your epidermis is the outermost layer of skin on your body. It protects your body from harm, keeps your body hydrated, produces new skin cells and contains melanin, which determines the color of your skin. Conditions that are most commonly helped from this natural agent include but are not limited to rashes,athletes feet, ringworm and mild acne.
Juglans Nigra is, just as it sounds, the hull of the black walnut tree. The Black Walnut tree grows in the eastern US and parts of Canada, and while easy to grow, it is not plentiful. This is the reason the salve is sought after-Richmond Virginia, is where I forage for this rare but useful nut- and is only available during the months of September and October-during this time they fall freely from the trees onto the ground and remain there in various degrees of decomposition.
The reason I ever thought that there must be more to these "nut shells" is the way they smelled-I noticed that the ones that were a little exposed, had a really unique, but pleasant aroma. It's a strong earthy, medicinal smell, with a citrus overtone. Which reminds us that medicine doesn't have to be aweful..
Another thing that you have to keep in mind when working with Black Walnut hills is the color-As in the picture above..the inside of the hull is black-Walnuts contain a chemical called juglone, which gives the walnut hull its deep black color. Juglone produces a brown-to-black, colorfast dye resistant to ultraviolet fading, making it an ideal outdoor wood stain. While any walnut variety will produce a stain, the best choice is hulls from the black walnut tree. When working with Natural Black Walnut hulls, safety is essential because stains on your skin can last for several days and maybe even weeks.
